The Exclamation Mark

The exclamation mark (!) is used to express emphasis, surprise or astonishment.

  • Help me!
  • I don’t believe it!
  • Fire!
  • Watch out!

The exclamation mark is never used in academic or technical writing. You may come across it in fiction, particularly in dialogue, and in marketing copy.

The exclamation can be used to convey humour, irony and sarcasm.

  • What lovely weather! ( When it is not).
