What is the difference between childish and childlike?

 

Childish is not a compliment. Childish means immature.

  • His reaction to not winning the prize was very childish; he was sulking for weeks.

Childlike is usually used as a compliment because it refers to positive qualities such as innocence, honesty and curiosity.

  • He was childlike in his excitement about going on holiday.
